Happy Earth Day! 🌍️

Sustainability is hugely important to us here at Kingsbarns Distillery, not just today on earth day, but every single day.

Ever since we opened our distillery doors, we've been looking at how we can make our sustainability practices even better. Here's what we've been doing since the start, and more recently, to reduce our impact on the planet and give back to the environment around us.

1. We Use Local Ingredients

We're proud to be local! There are only three ingredients in Single Malt Scotch Whisky: Barley, Water and Yeast. At Kingsbarns we source our barley from local farms like Bill's here, supporting our British farmers in a sustainable way. Utilising all that Fife has to offer is at the forefront of our mission.

2. We Give Back To Our Environment

We give back to the environment around us by giving our waste products a new lease of life. The wet grist or draff left in our mash tun is pumped out and into our dedicated draff trailer where it will then be picked up by local farmers who will use it for cattle feed.

3. We're Going Cartonless

We have proudly made the decision to phase out our presentation boxes and cartons from across our core range as a major step towards reaching our target of net zero carbon emissions.

This change by Wemyss Family Spirits (the parent company of Kingsbarns Distillery) will result in the saving of more than a tonne of carbon each year, as we set out to become one of the greenest businesses in the sector.

Following an initial trial, 15% of sales went cartonless in 2023. This will be greatly expanded in 2024, with the shipping of our bottles being protected with recycled and recyclable card dividers. Read more about this initiative here.

4. We've Switched to EVs

Our sales team has now moved to 100% electric car use, and we're also proud to say that we've recently installed our own electric vehicle chargers in the distillery car park, making it easier for our visitors to charge up when they visit.

5. We Have Our Own Hydro Schemes

We're proud to announce the transition of our Kingsbarns and Darnley's Gin distilleries to 100% renewable energy sourced from our own hydro schemes. By harnessing the power of nature, we're not just reducing our carbon footprint – we're setting an example for the industry. Sustainable practices are not only essential for our planet's well-being but can also seamlessly integrate into business operations.

6. We're Installing A Heat Recovery System

We're currently in the process of expanding our production facilities, and as part of this, we're installing a heat recovery system. This will allow us to take heat generated heat from one distillation and put it directly into the next one, saving fuel and improving our carbon footprint on the production side.

This is just the beginning, and we're so grateful to have you come along on the journey with us.

Join us in raising a glass to a greener, more sustainable future! Sláinte! 🥃
