FAQs About Kingsbarns Distillery
What Is Kingsbarns Distillery?
Kingsbarns Distillery is an award-winning Lowland single malt Scotch whisky distillery near St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. It sits inside a beautifully restored 18th century farm steading and is one of Scotland's most exciting young distilleries.
The distillery is owned by the Wemyss family, who also produce Darnley's Gin on site. Every bottle of Kingsbarns whisky is made from locally grown Fife barley, pure water from the distillery's own deep aquifer, and carefully selected casks sourced from America, Portugal, France, and Spain.
Kingsbarns has won multiple awards, including World's Best Lowlands Single Malt at the World Whisky Awards in 2020 and 2022. The distillery has collected nearly 30 industry medals in just a few short years.
Here is the thing. Kingsbarns is not just a place to buy whisky. It is a full visitor experience. Tours, tastings, a gin cottage, a cafe with outdoor seating, and stunning views across the Fife countryside. Whether you are a seasoned whisky lover or a complete beginner, there is something here for you.

The History Behind Kingsbarns Distillery
How Did Kingsbarns Go from Farm Steading to Distillery?
The story of Kingsbarns starts with a man called Douglas Clement. He was a golf caddie at the famous St Andrews courses. Visiting golfers often asked him where the nearest whisky distillery was. There was not one nearby.
That gave him an idea.
In 2009, Clement set his sights on a derelict farm steading at East Newhall Farm. The building dated back to around 1800 and was part of the Cambo Estate. He raised initial funding from 32 investors and secured a grant from the Scottish Government. But the project needed more backing.
That is where the Wemyss family came in.
Who Are the Wemyss Family?
The Wemyss family have deep roots in Scottish whisky. Siblings William and Isabella Wemyss founded Wemyss Malts in 2005 as independent bottlers. They added the Darnley's Gin brand in 2010. The family also has historical ties to the Kingsbarns site itself.
In 2013, the Wemyss family acquired the distillery project. A painstaking three-year restoration followed. The goal was to preserve the original character of the old farmstead while fitting it with modern distilling equipment.
The distillery officially opened on St Andrew's Day, 30 November 2014. The first cask was filled in March 2015.
At the heart of the building is the Doocot. That is a traditional Scottish dovecote, and it is the oldest part of the original farm. Today, it houses the very first cask of Kingsbarns whisky ever filled. You can read the full Kingsbarns story here.
What Whisky Does Kingsbarns Make?
Kingsbarns produces Lowland single malt Scotch whisky. As defined by the Scotch Whisky Association, Lowland whiskies come from distilleries south of the Highland line and must be matured for a minimum of three years in Scotland.
The Kingsbarns style is light, fruity, and floral. That is typical of the Lowland region and makes it a great whisky for people who are just getting into single malts.
Here is what goes into every bottle:
-
Barley: Concerto barley, sourced from farms in Fife
-
Water: Drawn from the distillery's own aquifer, filtered through 300-million-year-old sandstone
-
Yeast: Two strains, one British and one French, to develop fruity character
-
Fermentation: A long 3 to 5 day process in stainless steel washbacks
-
Distillation: Slow distillation in two copper pot stills made by Forsyth of Rothes
-
Bottling: Non-chill filtered, natural colour, 46% ABV
Production Director Isabella Wemyss personally selects every cask used for maturation.
Core Collection Overview
The Kingsbarns core collection currently includes:
-
Doocot: The flagship expression. Matured in 90% ex-bourbon casks and 10% STR (shaved, toasted, and re-charred) casks. Light, tropical, and creamy with notes of banana, vanilla, and orchard fruit.
-
Balcomie: Named after a nearby golf course. Matured exclusively in ex-Oloroso sherry casks. Richer and darker, with notes of dried fruit, cinnamon, and spice.
-
Coaltown: A newer addition to the core range, continuing the Kingsbarns style of fruity, balanced Lowland single malt.
-
Kingsbarns 10 Year Old: Launched in 2025, this is the distillery's first age-statement release. Matured in 90% ex-bourbon barrels and 10% STR barriques for over a decade.
All core expressions are bottled at 46% ABV with no added colouring and no chill filtration.
What About Limited Editions and Single Casks?
Kingsbarns also releases limited edition bottlings throughout the year:
-
Distillery Reserve: An annual release. The 2024 edition was an 8 Year Old matured in ex-Oloroso sherry casks at 58.2% ABV.
-
Bell Rock: Available in both standard and cask strength versions.
-
Single Cask Releases: Periodic bottlings selected by Isabella Wemyss, each one unique.
-
Private Cask Ownership: You can buy your own cask of new-make spirit and have it matured at the distillery. Details are on the private whisky cask page.

What Makes Kingsbarns Different from Other Lowland Distilleries?
The Lowland whisky region has seen a huge revival in recent years. But Kingsbarns stands apart for several reasons.
Local sourcing. All barley comes from farms in Fife. The water comes from the distillery's own aquifer. This is genuinely local whisky, shaped by its landscape.
Cask expertise. Isabella Wemyss hand-selects every single cask. The family's background in independent bottling (through Wemyss Malts) gives them decades of cask knowledge that most new distilleries simply do not have.
Whisky and gin under one roof. Very few Scottish distilleries combine a single malt distillery with a dedicated gin cottage, botanical garden, and gin school.
The golf connection. Kingsbarns was born because visiting golfers wanted a nearby distillery. That link to St Andrews and the golfing world runs through everything the distillery does.
Sustainability. The distillery and visitor centre are powered by 100% renewable energy. Since 2024, Kingsbarns has phased out presentation boxes to reduce packaging waste.
What Is New at Kingsbarns in 2025 and 2026?
Kingsbarns is a distillery that is still growing and evolving. Here is what has been happening.
-
Kingsbarns 10 Year Old. Released in 2025, this was the distillery's first age-statement whisky. Matured in ex-bourbon and STR casks, it marks a milestone for the brand.
-
Expansion plans. In late 2022, the Wemyss family announced plans for twelve new bonded warehouses and a bottling plant. This will allow more whisky to be matured on site rather than in external warehouses.
-
US market entry. Kingsbarns has expanded distribution to over 30 global markets, including more than 30 US states.
-
Sustainability milestones. The move to remove outer packaging and the shift to electric vehicles are part of a broader commitment to reach net zero ahead of industry targets.
-
New expressions. With the distillery's stocks now maturing past the ten-year mark, expect more age-statement releases and limited editions in the years ahead.
