We don’t distil peated spirit, but remain true to our Lowland roots of a light spirit (the opposite end of the scale in character from peated spirit). For our peated releases, we rather use casks which have previously been used to mature peated spirit in (and some quite well known peated spirit where we are not allowed to mention the names!).
This peatiness is imbued into the spirit from the cask and not from the peated barley, giving a light complexity which perfectly compliments the Kingsbarns character which we are becoming so well-known for. We think this approach makes us true to our roots as the true Lowland spirit.
If you are more taken by a 'classic', rugged west coast whisky but want to experience the fruity undertones of the Kingsbarns spirit then the following single casks should get you started on the right foot:
Our ex-Peated release #751 has been aged for 6 years in an ex-peated cask and exhibits the effects on our light spirit. Starting off with sweet gentle smoke and caramel shortbread, this whisky works towards a delicate, medium long peaty finish. You'll find Scotland in a dram of this whisky, with our own special Lowland twist really topping it off; and at cask strength it will gracefully knock your socks off!
However, if you are not so taken by the strong stuff and prefer a good 46% ABV scotch then ex-Peated release #749 is for you. This dram channels a coastal breeze on the nose from the effects of the cask before moving into campfire smoke and tinned tropical fruit develop the palate; the finish includes chocolate, lime and sea salt - a perfect exhibit of the matrimony between a peated cask and our light, fruity Lowland spirit.
